Your wedding day is one of the most special days of your life, and it’s important that you hire professionals who you fully trust to capture it! While there are many talented photographers out there, hiring a husband and wife team comes with its own set of advantages. Here are six reasons why you should consider hiring a husband and wife wedding photography team for your big day.

You get a built-in second photographer

When you hire a husband/wife team, you’re getting two photographers rather than just one. But this is different from adding a second shooter to a wedding package. You’re hiring an established team, who work with each other consistently and know how to use each others’ strengths throughout the day.

Married photography teams have experience facing lots of different wedding day challenges together. Since they work together outside of your wedding day as well, they’re able to plan for your wedding in advance, including discussing your timeline and coming up with backup options for when things don’t go as planned. They likely even have established routines and time-saving hacks together, which will make your portrait times go quicker and your wedding day flow more smoothly overall!

You can meet them before the wedding

When booking a lead photographer with a second shooter, it’s very unlikely that you’ll meet the second photographer until they arrive on the day of. In a lot of cases, the lead photographer has never worked with the second shooter before, and your wedding day might be their first time meeting, too!

While most photographers vet their second shooters and ask for plenty of examples of their work, you may find it harder to fully trust the second shooter on the day of, since you haven’t had the chance to build that connection yet.

If you book a married team, you will most likely get to meet both of them prior to the wedding! For example, we meet our couples over a video call before booking the wedding. We also include engagement sessions in our wedding collections, so you and your partner will meet the two of us at least twice before the big day!

When you know both of your photographers, you can feel confident that you’ve seen examples of both of their past work, especially if they’ve photographed an engagement session for you. You’ll also feel more relaxed, knowing that you’ve met them before and you know how they’ll vibe with you throughout the day. It’s much easier to feel comfortable expressing all the emotions of a wedding day when you know the people behind the camera!

We capture two angles of important moments

When you hire a husband/wife photography team, you get two different perspectives during key moments throughout your wedding day. For example, while one photographer captures shots of the bride walking down the aisle (from her perspective), the other will be able to document the groom’s reaction (from his perspective).

This means you’ll get a lot more variety and more photos overall!

You’ll be able to get variety and multiple angles when hiring a non-married team as well! We just have done so many weddings together that we have a system for who covers which angles, which saves us time and keeps us from accidentally getting the same shots.

We can photograph in two places at once

Just like getting multiple angles, a married photography team can also be in two places at once! For example, after the ceremony, Chris will usually photograph the reception details while I’m capturing your family photos. We also split up during the getting ready portion of the day, and are in constant communication to make sure you don’t see each other before your first look!

Splitting up like this makes it easier for us to document all aspects of your wedding day without missing any important details or moments along the way. And our many years of experience with doing so means that we always know where the other person is, and we trust each other to capture all the important stuff!

Because husband/wife teams have been working together for so long, they know how to divide these tasks quickly and efficiently. This allows them to move through a shot list more quickly, leaving more time for candid moments throughout your wedding day!

We can demonstrate couple poses easily

Probably our favorite reason to a husband and wife team is that we don’t have to just tell you how to pose – we can show you! Since we both come to your engagement session and wedding day, we’ll be able to demonstrate the couple poses for you, so that you can copy what we do. This saves tons of time while taking your portraits!

Bonus: You may get two lead photographers!

This may not be true of every husband and wife team, but in our case, you’re booking two lead photographers! A lead photographer is usually the photographer you hired – the one who knows how to take the lead on the wedding day and could photograph the whole day on their own. Second shooters often have less experience, and may not have photographed an entire wedding day in a leading role before.

Chris and I were both wedding photographers before we met, so we both have experience as lead photographers! I (Micaela) am the extravert, so you’ll usually see me taking the lead on posing and other people- or communication-related tasks throughout the day. But Chris has even more years of wedding experience under his belt than I do, and you’ll often see him covering the angles that a lead photographer typically would!

When booking a team with two lead photographers, you can feel extra confident knowing that if anything unexpected comes up, your photographers can seamlessly switch roles and continue covering your wedding day as if nothing ever happened.

When it comes to capturing all of those once-in-a-lifetime moments on your wedding day, there are many reasons why you should consider hiring a husband and wife photography team. With an established system for how to divide tasks throughout the day, the chance to get to know them both in advance, and the way they can demonstrate poses for you, you can feel extra confident that you’re hiring vendors you can trust.

We understand how important this day is for couples, and we work hard to not only provide gorgeous photos, but also an amazing experience, so that you can cherish your wedding memories for years to come!
