Meet Christal of Christal’s Creations!
Q: What is your business name, and what service(s) do you provide for your clients?
A: My business name is Christal’s Creations. We provide custom cakes and desserts for all special occasions, celebrations or just because you’re craving something sweet!
My business serves anyone with a sweet tooth! I enjoy bringing all cake and dessert visions to life.
Q: How did you get started as an entrepreneur? When did you realize you were passionate about baking?
A: I started baking as a “side hustle” in 2013. I am a self-taught baker, so I realized my passion when I would surprise myself with how good something turned out. Taking on new challenges and being successful, makes me happy and keeps me going.
Q: Is there a story behind your business name or logo?
A: I wasn’t very original with coming up with my business name, but over time, it just stuck! As for my business logo, my favorite color is purple, so I couldn’t resist incorporating it.
Q: Do you have a team? If so, introduce them – including yourself! If not, share a little bit about you and your favorite things!
A: All cakes are made and decorated by me, but I do have the BEST team. Without the help of my parents and husband, my business would not thrive as much as it has over the years.
My mom is my personal grocery shopper when I’m in need of last-minute items or when I’m preparing for an upcoming order. She is my kitchen assistant and might just be a better cake pop roller than me! She has sacrificed her sleep and time to support me in any way that she can to help me succeed from the very beginning.
My dad has washed countless pots, pans, and spatulas. He does it all without a single complaint. His thorough dish-washing skills have definitely helped speed up the baking process many times.
Last but not least, my husband. He helps me with all of my in-store pickup orders, pre measures ingredients to keep things going, is also an expert dishwasher and careful driver when helping me deliver precious cake cargo.
I truly couldn’t have a better team to help and support me and best of all, share my successes with.
Q: How would you describe your style? How has it changed and evolved over time?
Over the years, I have tried many different artistic forms of cake decorating, however over time I have found my love for decorating with buttercream. I have had many opportunities to test my skillsets with different frosting and piping techniques and realized the joy that buttercream brings me.
Q: What is your favorite project that you’ve ever worked on?
A: Although I love making all kinds of cakes, my favorite orders are naked cakes! I love rustic themed cakes and I can’t seem to have just one favorite, so here are two favorites; a wedding cake and a first birthday cake!
Q: Where do you see your business in 5 years? What are you most excited about for the future of your business?
A: Over the next 5 years, I would like to see my business taking on more corporate orders for large companies. I recently had an opportunity to make 400 cupcakes for my church and I enjoyed the challenge.
I am most excited to watch my business continue to grow and take on new challenges.
Q: What is one thing you want people to know about you and/or your business?
A: I would like people to know that I pour my heart into every individual order that I receive. All of my desserts are made from scratch, so everything has its own unique flavor. Being self-taught has been a challenge, but the most rewarding one.
Q: If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
A: This is a very tough question! I love all different food cuisines, so it’s hard to pick just one. I am from Trinidad and Tobago, so I would ultimately say a native dish called Pelau (pronounced: pay-lou). It is a traditional dish made with rice, pigeon peas and chicken that is cooked with fresh seasonings and coconut milk and gets most of its flavor and color from burnt or browned sugar.
Q: Where can people follow you to learn more?
